The Fundamentals of Tennis

I trust this initial effort of mine in the world of letters will find a place among both novices and experts in the tennis world. I am striving to interest the student of the game by a somewhat prolonged discussion of match play, which I trust will shed a new light on the game.

May I turn to the novice at my opening and speak of certain matters which are second nature to the skilled player?

The best tennis equipment is not too good for the beginner who seeks really to succeed. It is a saving in the end, as good quality material so far outlasts poor.

Always dress in tennis clothes when engaging in tennis. The question of choosing a racquet is a much more serious matter. I do not advocate forcing a certain racquet upon any player. All the standard makes are excellent. It is in weight, balance, and size of handle that the real value of a racquet frame depends, while good stringing is, essential to obtain the best results. After you have acquired your racquet, make a firm resolve to use good tennis balls, as a regular bounce is a great aid to advancement, while a "dead" ball is no practice at all.

If you really desire to succeed at the game and advance rapidly, I strongly urge you to see all the good tennis you can. Study the play of the leading players and strive to copy their strokes. Read all the tennis instruction books you can find. They are a great assistance.

More tennis can be learned off the court, in the study of theory, and in watching the best players in action, than can ever be learned in actual play. I do not mean miss opportunities to play. Far from it. Play whenever possible, but strive when playing to put in practice the theories you have read or the strokes you have watched.

Never be discouraged at slow progress. The trick over some stroke you have worked over for weeks unsuccessfully will suddenly come to you when least expected. Tennis players are the product of hard work. Very few are born geniuses at the game.

Tennis is a game that pays you dividends all your life. A tennis racquet is a letter of introduction in any town. The brotherhood of the game is universal, for none but a good sportsman can succeed in the game for any lengthy period. Tennis provides relaxation, excitement, exercise, and pure enjoyment to the man who is tied hard and fast to his business until late afternoon. Age is not a drawback. The tennis players of the world wrote a magnificent page in the history of the World War. No branch of sport sent more men to the colours from every country in the world than tennis, and these men returned with glory or paid the supreme sacrifice on the field of honour.

The following order of development produces the quickest and most lasting results: 1. Concentration on the game. 2. Keep the eye on the ball. 3. Foot-work and weight-control. 4. Strokes. 5. Court position. 6. Court generalship or match play. 7. Tennis psychology.

Concentration.
--------------
Tennis is played primarily with the mind. The most perfect racquet technique in the world will not suffice if the directing mind is wandering. There are many causes of a wandering mind in a tennis match. The chief one is lack of interest in the game. No one should play tennis with an idea of real success unless he cares sufficiently about the game to be willing to do the drudgery necessary in learning the game correctly. Give it up at once unless you are willing to work. Conditions of play or the noises in the gallery often confuse and bewilder experienced match-players playing under new surroundings. Complete concentration on the matter in hand is the only cure for a wandering mind, and the sooner the lesson is learned the more rapid the improvement of the player. The surest way to hold a match in mind is to play for every set, every game in the set, every point in the game and, finally, every shot in the point. A set is merely a conglomeration of made and missed shots, and the man who does not miss is the ultimate victor.

Golf - Teaching Your Child How To Play

More children are learning to play golf today than ever before. A big reason for this is Tiger Woods. He has taken the sport and popularized it among children of all ages. What used to be a boring game for kids to play has suddenly become increasingly popular.

Children are now discovering what many adults already know: golf is a lot of fun! While your children may love hitting golf balls with one of your old golf clubs, how do you begin to develop their skills? Here are a few tips to help you give your children a good head start in the golfing world.

One of the first things you may want to do is enroll them into a golf class. Many of your local golf courses have classes just for children. There is no need to go out and buy a new set of golf clubs for your child. The class will provide the equipment necessary. This will not only save you some money right now, but it will give you time to find out if your child truly enjoys the game of golf or not. You don't want to go out and spend a few hundred dollars only to find out your child doesn't really like golf after all.

The next tip is one that is very important for both you and your child. Be patient. It is so easy to want to see your child start hitting long drives and sinking 30 foot putts. In order for them to want to continue learning the game of golf they need your support. Let your child progress at their rate. The golf classes will help them develop immensely.

When you are on the practice range with them be sure you encourage them, even when they are spraying the ball all over the range. They will pick up the finer points of the game later as they grow older.

When your child has taken some classes and they show a genuine interest in the game of golf, buy them their own set of golf clubs. Be sure you have your child fitted properly. Of course, since they will be growing in height and weight, understand that the clubs you buy today may be too small within a year or two at the most. You can get children's golf clubs at an inexpensive price.

Use the time that you spend golfing with your children as a bonding time. Enjoy yourselves and the time you're out on the course. You can even use this time to develop a good communication with your child. Talk about other things than golf. You'll be surprised at how the golf course can help you and your children bond together. It will spill over into other areas of your lives as well.

Your child may never grow up to be the next Tiger Woods, or Michelle Wie, but they can grow up loving the game of golf. More importantly, they can grow up enjoying the time spent together with you out on the golf course.

Michelle Wie is the Real Deal

Golfer Michelle Wie has gained worldwide attention for her attempts to compete in the men's PGA Tour, about how she has come so close (one stroke short of qualifying for the 2004 PGA Tour Sony Open) yet never quite made the cut. .But let's not forget that she also deserves our attention for her outstanding golf prowess and for her remarkable accomplishments to date. She may not yet have what it takes to compete with the big boys, but Michelle Wie is the real deal.

Witness the amazing records that the 16-year-old prodigy has set in such a short time: youngest player ever to qualify for an adult USGA-sanctioned tournament -age 10 years, 9 months, 24 days (2000 Women's U.S. Amateur Public Links); youngest player ever to qualify for an LPGA tournament - age 12 (2002 LPGA Takefuji Classic); The youngest winner (male or female) of an adult USGA-sanctioned tournament - age 13 (2003 Women's U.S. Amateur Public Links); youngest player to make a cut in an LPGA tournament and major - age 13 (2003 Nabisco Championship); youngest player to play in a PGA Tour event - age 14 (2004 Sony Open);lowest round by a female in a PGA Tour event (also the first female to score a sub-70 round in PGA Tour history) - 68 (2004 & 2006 Sony Open)l youngest player to play in Curtis Cup history - age 14 (2004); youngest female to make a cut in any professional male tour event - age 16 (2006 SK Telecom Open); first female medalist in a men's US Open qualifying tournament - age 16 (2006 US Open Local Qualifying at Turtle Bay Hawaii).

Wie was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on October 11, 1989 and is of Korean descent. Like most great golfers, she began playing the game of golf almost as soon as she could get around on her own two feet, at age four. At age 10, she shot a personal-best 64 in 18 holes at the 5,400-yard Olomana Golf Links, one of Hawaii's most difficult courses. That year (1999), she became the youngest player to qualify for a USGA amateur championship and also advanced into match play at the Women's U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship using her grandmother's clubs.

Clearly, Wie has already accomplished much, but the general consensus is that the world has yet to see the best that Michelle Wie has to offer.

Free Golf Tips - Beware of Bad Advice

If you have decided to take up golf, you are probably in search of free golf tips. Good news! You’ve found them! These free golf tips are designed with every golfer in mind, and they are beneficial to anyone who reads them.

The first tip is to beware of tips! That’s right. Many well meaning golfers will offer you a great deal of advice. What many people fail to realize is that what works for one golfer probably won’t work for others. These tips, however, are for all golfers.

Enjoy the game. Getting mad isn’t much fun. If you aren’t enjoying the game, you need to find out why, and fix the problem. Getting upset over bad swings or problem areas won’t fix anything, and it will only serve to take all of the fun out of the game. This is a game that tests your skill and technique – but it is still a game, and games are meant to be enjoyed!

Be a great sport – even if you aren’t great at golf. Be respectful to the other players. Be still and quiet when they are taking their shots. Don’t criticize or make fun of the way they stand, shoot, or grip the club….no matter how good you think your own game is. Good sportsmanship is everything, and without it, you won’t have any golfing companions in a very short period of time.

Golf responsibly. Do not litter the course. If the grass is loosened and turned when you shoot, use your foot to replace it. Wait your turn if you come upon a group at the next tee – don’t rush them. Use caution when driving golf carts, and use caution again when you take your shots to avoid hitting houses, buildings, animals, or other golfers. Leave the course better than you found it.

When you practice, practice at the hardest holes on the course…don’t take the easy way out, practicing only on the easy holes, thinking you are making headway – you aren’t. Practice on the hardest tees, and the hardest putts. Put yourself in the traps, and practice getting out of them. Imagine worst case scenarios and set them up. This is what will make you a better golfer.

Play miniature golf, and take it more seriously – but still have fun. Playing miniature golf is a great way to improve your putting skills. Many seasoned golfers laugh at this suggestion – but its true! Good miniature golf courses provide really challenging obstacles that you must put through, under, around and over….some even offer more challenges than you will ever find on your local golf course greens!

Keep your eyes open for used training aids. If they are reasonably priced – buy them! Not all training aids will help you, but unfortunately, you won’t know which ones will unless you try them out first. Get together with golfing friends and go in together to buy golfing aids that you can share. The aids that are available on the market today will help you improve your game a great deal, in a short amount of time.

Read a lot – and play even more. There are lots of techniques that you can learn from golfing websites, golf books, and golf magazines – but you will learn them faster out on the course! Read it once, and then go try it. If you need to, print it out and carry it with you – but go put the theory into practice – and practice, practice, practice! You can learn the concept sitting in your living room, but you will never make that concept work for you if you don’t take it out onto the course with you!

If you can’t get on the course, and you have some spare time and enough room, practice your swing. You don’t need a ball for this. Consider using a training club during these times to help build strength as well. If you take the time to practice your swing several times a day, you will find that you have a perfect swing for you in short order! If your golf game gets rained out – use the time to practice your swing, or practice your putting indoors…but don’t let that time go to waste! The best free golf tips you will ever receive will all include the word ‘practice!’

How To Plan A Successful NFL Party

It really is a great feeling whenever you can just grab a six-pack from the fridge, sit back on your favorite chair, and enjoy an NFL game. You could call this your alone time or your moment of Zen, but there are times when you would like to enjoy a game with your buds. In that case, then an NFL house party should be set in place.

There are many things that you could include in your party. For example, if you and your friends are Jacksonville Jaguars fans, then what you could do is make the party themed after the team. If you are not all into that decorative hullabaloo, then you could just try and make it into a good old fashioned barbeque.

Inviting your friends

It's important to remember how many friends you are inviting over. This way, you have an idea of how much snacks to prepare, and how many bottles of beer to get. It would also allow you to get enough chairs for your friends, and maybe bring in extra space for would be gate crashers.

Courtesy

The NFL is the top league for American football and it produces the most fantastic games. If you are having an NFL party, then the probability of you catching an exciting game is quite high. If this is so, then you and your friends might tend to get rowdy and loud because of constant cheering (and probably cursing). Make sure that you inform your neighbors beforehand that you might be a bit noisy just for that night. The only problem to this is that you might be obligated to invite a neighbor you don't really like. In that case, it's up to you to utilize those PR skills.

Pot luck

You also might want your friends to contribute to the party. If ever this was your first party, then you probably wouldn't want to start a tradition of you providing everything from the place to the snacks. When you inform your buds, try assigning them specific things to bring so that everyone has a contribution to the world's greatest NFL party.

After game party

There might be times when the game is over, but people may still feel the need to party. In this case, then you should be prepared as the host to provide any possible entertainment. The entertainment really depends on what you and your friends are into. They could be board games, poker, good conversations, or MMORPGs. Whatever it is, it would be a good idea to have something prepared just in case everyone feels that the night is still young.

These are just a few things that you could consider when planning an NFL party at your place. In the end, what really matters is that you spend some quality time with your friends, and that a good game is on. Regardless of what you have planned for your party, your friends will always be there to keep you company and enjoy a great game with you. These are the simple things in life that are truly memorable and can't be bought with money.

The Top Academy of Golf

How are the top golf schools in America determined?

Are you planning on becoming the next greatest golfer in the league? Or are you planning to venture into a very successful career in the business world of golf? Congratulations! You have decided to turn your hobby and passion into a fruitful reality. The first thing you'll need to do is attend a golf academy or golf school to learn the basics. Attending will teach you, not only the basics, but also you how to focus on your game and goal and develop discipline along the way. An academy of golf can offer instruction and help the student develop the skills he needs to succeed in the game and in business.

But which academy of golf should you attend? Which is the best one for you?

Golf.com has listed the top 25 golf schools in the US. A Golf School Evaluation Plan was formed to study the qualifications of each golf school in the country and how it fared against other schools. They compared each school using several criteria to determine which ones are the best. These schools were determined and ranked using six criteria: breadth of programs, student-to-teacher ratio, technology, instruction hours, facilities/accommodations and level of experience.

All these top 25 schools have one thing in common: they all offer programs that help improve a student's game. Since the primary goal of attending an academy of golf is improve his own game and reach the professional level, it only makes sense that these schools are ready to help you deliver your A-game all the time.

All these schools also offer a good student-to-teacher ratio. The judging panel agreed, the smaller the ratio, the better because this gives the teacher a chance to be able to focus and study the level and skills of the student. This, in turn, puts him in a better position to assess and implement the necessary steps to improve the student's game. For short courses, a lot of these schools offer a 3:1 student-teacher ratio while longer courses or program have a higher number of students per teacher.

Additionally, these schools offer the latest in technology. They all offer a computer and video analysis of your game. The student is captured through video that he can watch in detail with the instructor. This helps the student to determine what he is doing right and what skills he still needs to improve. The video will allow you to put into slow motion your swing, the angle, the force at which you hit the ball, all allowing you and your instructor to critique your performance.

Hours of instruction were also part of the criteria for judging the top 25 schools in the US. These are schools that prioritize playing time and incorporated them into the lesson plan. An academy of golf that doesn't include time on the golf course as part of the lesson does not greatly benefit the student. Hearing and reading techniques is not the same as actually going on the greens and practicing it himself. Practice makes perfect after all.

Facilities and accommodations were also taken into consideration. Some of these schools don't offer state-of-the-art facilities while some offer the best facilities there is to accurately assess the student's abilities and skills in golf. One thing the judges agree on is that all these institutions provide practice facilities that are essential for any golfer who seriously wants to improve their game.

These schools are also taught by dedicated and experienced instructors and staff that include the Top 100 Golf Teachers as judged by Golf.com. These Top 100 Teachers are all members of the Professional Golfer's Association (PGA) of America and are determined to make you reach your full potential in the game of golf.

It will be tough to decide the best academy of golf for you since all of them offer unique features that can and will help you develop the skills to compete at the professional level. But no matter which school you decide to go to, it will eventually depend on your level of commitment.

Performing Baseball Swing Drills

In order for beginners in the game of baseball to understand the main principles of hitting a ball, baseball swing drills are definitely what it takes. Also, there has to be kept in mind that professional coaches assisting their students through the intensive training required for gaining the experience and professionalism of playing the game of baseball are constantly developing baseball swing drills. In order for the player to be able to properly hit the ball, and considering the baseball swing is the essential element of distributing the energy from the back of the body to the front, most professional coaches are focusing on the baseball swing from the start. There has to be paid attention to the fact that, in order to expand the player’s capacity in the game of baseball, baseball swing drills are specially being developed.

An important aspect which has to be taken into consideration is being represented by the fact that specific baseball swing drills which are inducing the psychology of playing baseball in the techniques that each student might present are being developed by most professional baseball coaches. Also, there has to be kept in mind that as they can be done as well at home, outside the training, baseball swing drills can be done during baseball training. The more efficient a player can hit the ball in the game of baseball, as the more baseball swing drills he/she performs. There has to be paid attention to the fact that, in order to remain in touch with the game and in order to improve their skills, there are professionals baseball players who are still executing baseball swing drills during their free time. Continuing to practice can keep him/her up to the standards, even though a player reaches a certain level of professionalism.

How to Play Golf Like Tiger Woods?

Do you wanna shave 10 strokes off your golf scores immediately?

Then read on...

Did ya watch Tiger Woods during the U.S Open at Torrey Pines this year?

Did ya see how he meticulously planned each golf shot...he is a pure golf warrior!

Tiger Woods is the best golfer on the planet mainly because he fully understands his strengths...and weaknesses...yes, even Tiger has weaknesses.

You might think to play golf like Tiger Woods means to bomb every drive...

Or go for the miracle golf shot. This is hardly the case....

Read on...

When Tiger has the lead in the final round of a golf tournament he usually plays conservative; like hitting fairway wood off the tee...this takes the big number out of the equation...he lets his opponents beat themselves as they aggressively chase him.

Tiger’s knee hurt badly during all 4 rounds of the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines this past weekend. A weakness in his game not to be denied or ignored. Because of his knee injury Tiger knew what he was capable of, and what he wasn’t capable of…

Tiger played within his limits!

When Tiger was in the rough on a par 5, he laid up. He didn’t go for the green in two and risk shooting himself out of the golf tournament.

Tiger Woods learned early in life under the tutelage of his father Earl on how to survey the golf course AND his opponents with uncanny precision. Tiger does this through the fine art of course management…

And mental toughness!

What is the fine art of course management you say? It all starts with knowing your limits. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses, and knowing your opponent's strengths and weaknesses...and of course know the golf course you are playing on...this is your battlefield!

Tiger Woods knows his limits and plays within them. So many high handicap golfers try for the "miracle shot" when they are in trouble...This usually ends up costing them at least 10 strokes or more a round (depending on their level).

Think about it, attempting to hit the miracle golf shot you can execute correctly one in ten times is a recipe for disaster...this makes for great drama...remember Tin Cup? How bout Jean Van de Velde when he choked in the '99 British Open? They both went for the miracle golf shot.

The truth is going for the miracle shot when everything is on the line may make for great T.V. drama; however this attitude will absolutely crush your golf scores!

Do you hit driver on a 300 yard par 4 even though you can only drive the ball 250? The 50 yard pitch shot is one of the hardest shots in golf...

Even for Tiger Woods!

Rather than reaching for the big stick, leave yourself 100 yards for your second shot. For most good golfers 100 yards is a full pitching wedge which they can hit in their sleep.

Play golf like Tiger Woods as he systematically wore down a game competitor in Rocco Mediate during the 18 hole playoff in this year’s U.S. Open ...think and plan ahead...know your strengths...and your weaknesses!

The fact of the matter is, if you plan on leaving the golf ball at your "sweet spot" distance from the hole, you will dramatically improve your chances of hitting more greens in regulation…

And more greens in regulation leads to more circles on your score card…which means more pars and birdies!

For some this sweet spot distance from the pin is 100 yards, some 120 yards, learn what your sweet spot distance is and practice that shot over and over at the range until you can hit that shot in your sleep.

Play golf like Tiger Woods sizing up his next major win!

Hit 'em Long and Straight!

Building Muscle Tips - Find Your Lean Body Today by Dave Vower

How do you strip the fat from your body to reveal your muscles?

Next time you go to the mall or shopping, take a look at the people around you. Look at their physiques, the people at your work, the people next to you on the bus/train, the people at the drug store and the local fast food joint. What is the average body type these days? Do people look like Rambo? or do they look like the fatties on Wall-E? Well, unless you train hard like Rambo, or physical exercise is part of your communities lifestyle, the standard then you'll see is to be overweight.

So how does one overcome the tendency our body's have to put on a few extra pounds? Now that we've got it so good, we've got to come up with a way to stay healthy and lean without popping pills and getting liposuction!

Building Muscle Tips - Strip That Fat From Your Body and Reveal Your Muscles Today!

OK, here's how it's done:

Strip The Fat Step 1. LIft Weights Don't worry, you wont become muscle bound overnight. It takes years of bodybuilding to get big like those guys. The cool thing is though, that muscles burn energy faster than any other cells in your body. So lift weights, and your body will burn more fat. Simple. Workout every couple of days and you'll notice the difference.

Strip That Fat Step 2. Aerobic exercise is a waste of time. Yep, you heard me if you want to burn fat fast, DON'T do it. You've got to be crazy right? Everyone says it's the best way so it must be true. Nope. Well, it does work, but it's not the best way. And it's hard work! If there's an easier way, wouldn't that be best? (haha, I'm such a lazy coach!)

So What's The Best Way To Train? Well, muscles burn more fat because they speed up the metabolism. So, what we've got to do is speed up the body's metabolism so it burns fat like a furnace! We can do this by doing short (15 minute) intense workouts. It's just like going for a jog for an hour, except you take all hard work, and put it into 15 minutes! This is commonly called High Intensity Training or Fartlek running.

Here's the training cycle:

It's divided into 2 parts. One intense, and the other less intense.

Here's an example of a HIIT training session:

# Stretches

# 5 min warmup

# 1 min walk/jog

# 20 second sprint

# 1 min walk/jog

# 20 second sprint

# 1 min walk/jog

# 20 second sprint

# 1 min walk/jog

# 20 second sprint

# 1 min walk/jog

# 20 second sprint

# 1 min walk/jog

# 20 second sprint

# 1 min walk/jog

# 20 second sprint

# 1 min walk/jog

# 20 second sprint

# 5 min cooldown

# Stretches

The great thing about this kind of workout is that you'll speed up your body so much that you'll be burning excess energy for ages! And it takes only 15 minutes! It's honestly the BEST way to strip that fat from your body quickly. Bodybuilders have known this for ages.

If you're already working out 3 days a week, do this interval training only on your OFF days so you don't over train. This is because your body just does not know how to burn fat and build muscle all at once. Swap between the weight training and interval training so you can get the best of both worlds. And make sure you take a day off too. We don't want you to burn out!

Anything else? Yep... one last thing:

Building Muscle Tips - Step 3. Eat Fresh High Water Content Food.

I'm not going to discuss all the benefits of eating fresh food, and reading food labels. But this stuff is important so let's just be serious for a second. If you want to burn more fat it's not going to happen eating McDonnalds and KFC. You know it's true. So eat fresh foods. That's right, your best option is to eat food that's got heaps of nutritional value and helps get your metabolism going. That food is fresh Fruit and vegetables.

Yeah, it's a bummer eh. You've been hearing it since you were a kid. "Eat Your Vegetables!" Turns out your parents were right eh. Well, I'm not about to tell em so don't worry!

If you're feeling a little uncomfortable and you're not in a major hurry, then adjust to adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet while cutting out the heavy carbohydrates like fries and burgers and that morning muffin with your coffee etc.

As you start to see results you'll become more motivated to change your diet. But trust me, if you

1. Do a weights workout

2. Do Intense Cardio

3. Eat Plenty of Fresh Fruit and Vegetables

Your body will thank you for it!
